AI DYED NAVY is a "true indigo dye" made using sukumo (a type of indigo plant) from Tokushima, which has been fermented and aged. It is dyed using an ancient indigo dyeing technique that is extremely time-consuming and laborious. Sukumo is the dyestuff that is essential to indigo dyeing. It is made by drying the leaves of a plant called Polygonum indigo, then fermenting and aging them to create a compost-like substance. It is made entirely by hand by professionals called indigo artisans. After the sukumo has been left to ferment for six months to a year, lye (a type of ash dissolved in water) is added and fermented to create the dye solution. The process of making this dye solution is called "aidate," and to aid in the fermentation of the dye solution, bran and sake are added, and the mixture is stirred morning and night for one to two weeks. The deep blue color created in this way is known as Japan Blue.
